Mother of a 5 month old infant who has not breastfed since he was a week
old. (Permission to post). The baby was born via c-sec after 36 hour labor.
Mom has inverted nipples. Baby was hospitalized at 7 days for "virus". Mom
breastfed baby with nipple shield for first week but then baby began refusing
after given bottles of EBM during hospitalization. Baby diagnosed with reflux
soon after this. Mom has been pumping since this time and has gotten into a
routine. She is tired but is motivated to pump until first birthday. My
question to lactneters is- Is there a way to get this baby to breast? He acts
as if he has no idea what her breasts are for. I think that starting with a
supplemental system might overwhelm Mom. Baby seems to have strong oral
aversion. Doesn't even seem to like having bottle nipple in his mouth. Mom
would love to begin nursing and make it to two years but doesn't know if she
could pump for that long. Did search and found much about adoptive nursing with
little detail about actual techniques to try. Thank you ahead of time.
