Beeswax is an interesting question. I use it to make my salves exclusively.
I get the fresh wax from the local beekeepers. ( we have some in our field)
we just don't own the supers.  Bees are extremely clean animals and as
stated quite fascinating.  I am a member of our  local and state association
of beekeepers.  In having to clean the wax I do have to heat it and the
honey that is left in it for quite a long time. It is cleaned strained and
strained again.  I have not experienced any problems with it on the nipples
of moms or causing  a reaction in babes.  I have noticed some but a few
reactions when salves are used with petroleum jelly, a & d ointment, or the
salve is made with peanut oil rather than a quality olive oil.  Also salves
made with paraffin wax do not allow the skin to breath, whereas beeswax
still maintains some of its porousness and allows the skin to breathe.  I
think that if reaction occurs it may be more to the herb or the oils than
the clostridium.  I agree breast milk on sore nipples is the best solution.
But some calendula, and even one of my salves in bees wax is fairly safe. 

 

Yes fresh unheated honey is not for infants internal consumption, wax seems
fairly safe. 

 

There are great homeopathic remedies also for sore nipples. Castor equi,
graphites, silcea, even symphytum.
