Hi All,
Jan writes:

Jan -- who doesn't intend to be flip, but people in poorer countries with
less than ideal, or even adequate diets have breastfed for centuries. It
would be lovely to give this girl adequate food for her own sake. Here's
hoping she realizes that the food she makes for her baby is perfect,
regardless. Perhaps if someone wants to donate some formula, the mom could
drink it as a supplement for her own diet.

I fight this argument alll the time with people. "They couldn't possibly
produce good enough breast milk (or any at all) if they are starving." What
is really sad is when someone (HCP or family/friend) tells a mom that if she
doesn't eat the "right" foods (What are all the "Right" foods anyway? THere
are so many of them...) that her milk will be deficient in this or that and
be bad for the baby or will not nourish the baby. Just another thing to add
to the frustarations and confusions of a new mom.
As far as giving the mom the AIM to supplement her diet, I doubt she would
drink it after the first smell! That stuff is NASTY! I wonder why babies
all over the world don't stand up and say "No More of this NASTY tasting
stuff! We want the REAL thing!"
OK, I know why, but wouldn't it be a real shock if they did??
