Wendy, put into the mix also the possibility of gastro-oesophageal reflux.
This may be intensified by untreated tongue and upper lip restriction, and
by oversupply. Attention to these issues (important) can be combined
with postural changes during feeds (head higher than stomach) and holding
the baby on an inclined angle on the mother's shoulder or front for 20-30
minutes after feeding. The poor little baby is clearly associating feeding
position with pain. It may take a little time to get over this association
- that "lying this way means I hurt".
Attention to position during diaper changes (propping up on a pillow) may
be necessary, too. Car safety capsules are important, but can also bunch up
the baby's body with pressure on the stomach. So I'd suggest limiting car
trips to absolutely essential ones and not carrying the baby in a car
safety seat when out of the car.
