Hi Debbie,
Last spring we had a visit from JCAHO, it was not a 'formal visit' and I
was not quite clear why we had the visit. But I was called into the meeting
along with a nurse, dietician, charge nurse and unit manager. The JCAHO
representative asked about what the dietician did on postpartum floor -
nothing unless specifially asked to. They then looked through a patients
chart noting each place the RN had charted and where I had charted. As a
lactation consultant I chart on our lactation forms (quite detailed) and
then on the charge slip and on the teaching chart. They liked our charts and
commented on them. Then she asked me who I saw on the floor. (all
postpartum pts, ) and what I told them about nutrition. She asked how many
pts per day I saw - (15 - 26). She asked for a basic rundown on what we say
(basic breastfeeding information). Later I heard that Lactation had done
very well.
Hope this helps! Judith Markham IBCLC
