To Terri, from your description it does not sound like you mismanaged. 
Adjusting for oversupply is not a simple fix, often it takes several 
modifications of what mom is doing over several weeks. Mastitis does happen 
and oversupply does predispose to it.

Just as an aside, if the oversupply is not severe at 10 days, I might not 
try to down-regulate that early. Instead I might try positioning 
adjustments, having baby's neck extended (nose tipped back farther) and the 
like. If mom had been using the shield in a less-than-ideal manner or if the 
size did not fit her, the baby may have been gassy from not getting a good, 
comfortable latch and feed.

No, I don't believe that 'kneading' is part of normal management of 
mastitis. Thorough draining of the affected breast is; nurse the baby or 
express.
