Mary:  I agree with Dr. Hale about azathioprine not being appropriate
during breastfeeding.  One thing I would ask, however, is why this woman
needs this particular medication.  There are certain conditions for which
azathioprine may be used but other more breastfeeding compatible meds
could be used instead.  Of course, in this woman's case her physician may
well have determined that this is the only med that would help her
condition.  But I'm also constantly amazed how often physicians don't
consider using another medication which in a particular condition may
work just as well and may be compatible with breastfeeding.  If you can
find out more details about her diagnosis, and if other meds are an
alternative, perhaps someone could tactfully ask the physician whether
