Has there ever been a movement to try to convince medical insurance
companies to pay for lactation consultations? In Massachusetts, it
seems that the insurance companies are willing to cover almost
everything else, but hardly any will pay for lactation, even if the baby
has a major problem feeding, and the lactation consultation is
recommended by the pediatrician. And yet the insurance companies end up
shelling out big bucks to pay for all of the illnesses that come when
the baby is switched to formula. And what's more, I believe that the
services of a lactation consultant seem less valuable and less
"scientific" to parents when their insurance company refuses to pay for
them.
Can't we do something?
