In America, one would be mortified if one's two year old yelled out "I
WANT BOOBIE" in public, so American nursing code words are usually more
discreet, in line with our more uptight culture. My daughter called it
milk, so I could tell her "we'll have milk at home", which she
understood to mean "I'll nurse you when we get home" and strangers
understood as "stupid mom forgot to bring this kid's bottle". I suspect
if I had a baby now (both my offspring are University students) I would
not care, but back then I was "just a mom" and vulnerable to all kinds
of family and societal pressures.
