I belong to a mostly HMO practice. They will not increase our capitation to
cover bf counseling because they have CLC's at the hospital. However the
CLC's at the hospital cannot weigh the babies, order therapies, order labs or
prescribe medications. I obviously can. The problem is that they have to
refer these moms back to their MD's who as we all know usually have not
recieved training in the proper management of lactation. This is where I can
come in. If they can refer the patients to me then I can manage the problems
correctly. So, I have asked to be included on the physician referral list
for the MEDICAL management of bf problems. They have asked my to submit a
proposal with itemization of services offered. Any ideas on how to best
present this concept of MEDICAL management? Or how to get past the
credentialling committee?
I was going to refer to the AAP guidelines when appropriate.
Has anyone done this? And if so, were you successful? What do you attribute
your success to? Any input is welcome! Thanks! Chris Betzold MSN NP CLE
