destruction the closeness of mother and child.>>

I am (as usual) writing a column for the paper, and of course, am working
the SIDS issue. The three basic issues I have confronted are 1: the pacifier
issue, 2: co-sleeping and 3: tobacco use.

The pacifier thing? Who is in the back pocket and making money off of this?
(nearly 2.5 million pacifiers have been recalled in the past 5 years,
according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission - CPSC.) The co-sleeping
thing? In 1999 the CPSC was adamant about "the only safe place for a baby to
sleep is a crib which meets federal guidelines" (and they have ties to the
crib industry) and the tobacco thing, which as was mentioned before, has
questionable issues due to a huge tobacco conglomeration funding the study.

We already know that the formula industry has tremendous influence in what
the AAP has to say, but the rest of these things? The more I write, the more
paranoid I feel, and the more neurotic people think I am!

<<Now it seems like it is coming at us from all directions, all over the
world. >>

Yes, it does feel like this. I have already been confronted by someone who
was angry that LLL does not recommend pacifiers (or specific brands)
because, "It has been proven that pacifiers prevent SIDS, why are they
against them?"

<<The AAP may have done themselves a lot of harm with this latest episode.
We need to encourage as many 'powers that be' to protest this in a public
way. Bravo Dr. Wight and publisher of the Journal to be.

Absolutely, Evi. This is a difficult time and it's easy to become
discouraged.

Best wishes from a beautiful Ohio day,
