Our NICN Neo's have decided that our NEC rates may be linked to pumped=20=

(MOM) breastmilk, (ARGH!!). They have started to culture milk stored in =
the=20
freezer of "suspect" infants. (signs of "feeding intolerance"). My unders=
tanding=20
is that they have isolated Klebsiella and Acetinobactor from as least one=
=20
cultured specimen and told the mothers that they could no longer use thei=
r=20
milk.

Holly, a few questions. How many moms and babies are you talking about
here? Was there NEC diagnosed in all these babies? Or was there fear that they
may developed NEC? How many days old and what gestational ages were these
babies when the diagnosis was made? Were any of these babies receiving
fortifiers in the expressed breast milk or receive any formula supplements?
Even babies receiving only 100% breast milk diet starting with the first
colostrum can develop NEC but statistically very few.
Cannot address the organisms that were isolated. Waiting to hear what
others on this group say.
