Fellow lactnetters - We are soon to begin a task force at Providence Portland
Med. Ctr. in Portland, OR re how to increase client satisfaction with the
breastfeeding help/education that they receive in the hospital. By far the
biggest complaint ( and
we receive a much higher number of compliments, thank goodness! ) is the
diverse and sometimes conflicting information received from their nurses.
We'll be looking at this from many angles I'm sure over the next few months,
but I'd love to hear how other LCs that are hospital based have dealt with
this kind of thing. How can we best educate the nurses so there is more
consistency in their care with breastfeeding moms and babies? And then what
kind of education works for busy Docs? At this point with one FTE for
consulting on a birthing unit that does over 200 birthes/mo. we see only the
inpatients that a nurse has indicated is having a problem. And then follow up
is done in our free outpatient breastfeeding clinic. Thanks for any much
valued suggestions!

Suzanne Millies RN, IBCLC
