Hi Kim,

Has her doctor also advised to not have sex anymore...?
If so, weaning might be wise.
If not, weaning is not necessary, as mer causes lower oxy surges than an
orgasm.
In case she notices sort of contractions during feedings, I could imagine
she might want to safeguard her pregnancy.
You say it took her four years to get pregnant... that is: pregnant with the
first child...? That is only eight months ago, not four years... ;o)
No numbers or research, but sometimes hormonal states seem to change after a
carried out pregnancy.
She did get pregnant fast this time! Still feeding and pregnant
nevertheless!
Already back to a regular period, before she got pregnant...? Might indicate
a different hormonal status this time...
Curious, if someone else has a more funded opinion.

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands (and not very good at summing up
studies and dropping their names and years, in whatever situation is at
hand...)

Subject: [LACTNET] Pregnant mom nursing 8 month old-risk to pregnancy?

Hi all,
I have just had an urgent call from a mom of an 8 month old who has just
found out she is pregnant again. This mom has had 2 prior miscarriages and
took 4 years to get pregnant. During the last pregnancy she needed to take
Progesterone 100 mg daily for the first 3 months to support her continued
pregnancy.
Her doctor has advised that she must wean immediately because
breastfeeding may cause problems with this pregnancy. Her baby breastfeeds
4 times per day. She does not want to wean but also does not want to
jeapordize this pregnancy. I have never dealt with this before and told her
I
would ask a few thousand experts their opinions.
She is very anxious and I would like to get back to her as quickly as
possible.
Thanks so much in advance.
Kim Scott RNBN IBCLC
