I had 2 mothers call yesterday with the same question. Both mothers have 8 month old babies, that they have been breastfeeding and pumping at work and having babies bottle fed while they are at work. In the last few days their stored milk has started having the "rancid" odor and does not taste good. I have the usual suggestions (Thank you Nancy M. for your handout and info.) I have some questions from them.

They are using a popular personal use pump that is an open system. They each asked if the pump could be the cause.

One of the mothers when I suggested that she try scalding the milk asked about microwaving the milk. My usual statement about microwaving human milk is NO, but she felt that would be the only doable situation. Does anyone have information or suggestions regarding microwave in this situation.

Thank you for all of your kind suggestions,
Marla
