Dear Jacqueline,
The potential problem you are interested in, mothers not labeling their milk
at the worplace and the possibility of aids being transmitted, is not the only
problem. All kinds of things can happen to the mothers milk if she leaves in
in the refrigerator at work. Let your imagination run wild. There have even
been stories of people putting it in their coffee!!

We teach a 2 hour class for mothers returning to work and one of my strong
recommendations to the mothers is that each one carry her own, personal cooler
with her and keep her milk with her for safety. Also they can keep their milk
chilled to and from work. Most mothers use those "blue ice" packs that they
freeze overnight. The milk stays chilled for at least 12 hours in the mom's
cooler. None of the working mothers I work with label their bottles of milk
because it is not necessary.
When mom or baby is hospitalized, they do label their bottles because many
mothers store their milk in the same freezer of the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit. That is the place where errors are more likely to occur, because so
many mothers store their milk together and the truth is sometimes milk does
get mixed up and even fed to the wrong child. I'm sure I'm not the only one
on Lactnet aware of such errors.
