I have used Dr. Karp’s video and techniques in my infant care classes for
years. I always point out to the parents that these are techniques that
have been used for years to soothe a crying baby; he just puts it
together in a nice neat package that is easy to remember. I have used
his techniques on a daily basis in my lactation rounds for almost five
years, and I have yet to meet the infant that I can not soothe (I
demonstrate all the s’s except for sucking, moms demonstrate that one
 ). Parents have called me a “baby whisperer” and love it when I show
them there is no special trick.

I usually show only ½ of the film in classes, from the point where he
introduces the “5 ways to turn on the calming reflex”. Over the years I
have many parents provide me with follow up, and some of the
comments I have received include “it changed the way I parented”, “we
loved using the 5 s’s”, and “we used to perform the 5 s’s for friends and
family to show them we could quiet the baby”.

I have found that fathers really latch (pun intended) onto these
techniques, because of the methodical format. They also seem to take
ownership of this role and love that can be soothers; they take pride in
the performance.

I too have had the privilege to see Dr. Karp speak and I have only been
impressed with his dedication to families and children. I wish I had
seen his “The Happiest Toddler on The Block” when my little ones went
through that stage.
