Got a question for you wise ones: there are a lot of hospitals that have policies that say if a baby has a low glucose, they automatically give formula 30 ml and recheck the glucose in 30 minutes (then usually give another 30 ml because there hasn't been enough time for the body to digest and use the foreign food),. One of our LC's has been experimenting with if the baby doesn't latch immediately or hasn't latched, hand expressing colostrum and putting it under the baby's tongue for immediate absorption. I noticed that this was a recommended practice for bovine colostrum in the alternative nutrition world (at least advertised that way). Are there any studies out there to validate this? Can babies absorb nutrients from colostrum under the tongue and raise blood sugar that way? Just wondering.
