Hi folks
First a re-introduction (or should that be a re- re- re-introduction). I'm
back again after a long break. I'm Denise Fisher, IBCLC and midwife, from
Brisbane, Queensland Australia. Amongst other things I work in a maternity
unit which delivers about 130 babies a month. All staff work in all the
areas ie. birth suite, ante/postnatal and neonatal special care.
We have a consent form for mothers of breastfed babies which explains the
problems of artificial formula and a place for both mother and midwife who
explained it to sign.
I was instrumental in getting it used and adapted it from one that NMAA has
and I think they might have adapted theirs from one that Sue Cox in
Tasmania uses. Anyway, the first draft of it started, "The paediatricians
of this unit believe that...etc". When I put it up for everyone to comment
on the midwives got a little upset and I had to change it to "The midwives
and paediatrician of this unit..." It was really good to get such good
support for it.
It's used every time a breastfed baby gets formula ie when the mother
requests it for no good reason and when it's ordered for medical reasons.
(Is that a patronising statement? I'll have to think about it!)

Great to be back and catching up on all the old faces (well, ...names).
Fancy Rob still being here - I see you're still giving him as hard a time
as ever :)
on ya Rob.

Denise
