Dear Lactnet Friends:

The discussion of the Korean interaction has been fabulous, professional and
awesome! I have learned a lot!!

Thank you everyone, for both the personal and the private emails.

Everyone has their own point of view, and good reasons for it. Some people
felt that the mother didn't really want to breastfeed, and was just going
along with the consult and using the pain of her wound as an excuse. Others
felt that the mother was overwhelmed with the pain of her 3rd degree
episiotomy, lack of sleep, going through a birth experience in a factory and
other issues that weren't even explored.

The best information has come from a Korean person who told me that mothers
sit up in Korea, so the baby won't have to fight gravity to get the milk
out. This person also mentioned that the mother probably wasn't using any
ice on her incision, again due to the cultural beliefs.

Looking back, I wish I had shown the DVD of what I was planning to do first.
I wish that I had gotten the mother to talk more about her birth experience
and connected with her more. I agree with the folks that say the mother was
overwhelmed and that is why she stood up and turned her back on me. I wish I
had gone more slowly, and not moved to the breastfeeding part without
ensuring that the mother felt ready.

sigh..

While I hear Liz's point of view about the fee (thank you Liz for your
lovely articulate reasoning), I feel fine with taking less money; in fact, I
would not have felt right taking a full fee. Sometimes learning has to be
paid for, and I accept that I have been given an education. One of the joys
of private practice is that I can do what I feel is right for me...within
the parameters of best practice and professional standards of care. That's a
decision we all can make, with honor.

warmly, and thank you from my heart for this marvelous community that we are
in!!!
