Dear Sue, I used to feel as a CB teacher for a volunteer organization that
our job was to teach parents how to be consumers, we were consumer
advocates. I now give assertiveness training for parents receiving advice
from HCPs!

Yes, it is a problem to teach parents what they need to know and how to use
it in the medical model. One reason that hospital based classes fail to do
that is they are controlled by the very model that we want parents to resist
:-( How many times has a hospital based CB educator been hauled on the
carpet for telling parents XYZ and told by the powers that be that she must
stop?

The freedom that we had as independent CB educators was what helped bring
about the childbirth revolution in the early 70's. Spoon feeding parents
about the virtues of high tech care doesn't get the same results :-(
Pat in SNJ (and I'm an HCP too!)
