In response to Judy's request for tips on keeping an older baby from biting
while nursing......
My still-nursed 18 mo old son went through a terrible biting phase several
months ago. I am very dedicated to nursing him until he decides to wean, but
the biting had gotten so severe that I was seriously considering weaning him,
mind you he had 16 teeth @ 12 mo!!! All the tips I had heard (end the
feeding, be stern and tell him no, etc.) had not worked for me, and I am a
non-hitting parent, so I was at my wits end. A doula suggested something
that had worked for her. As he chomped down she suggested that I press his
head into my breast and hold for a second, thereby causing him to release his
grasp so that he could breath. I wasn't sure how I felt about this, but I
was feeling so abused by the biting, that I was desperate and did try it. It
only took about 2 very shocked reactions from my son for him to quit
completely!!!!! Our nursing was back on track. I did, however, do this in
the most gentle way possible. I have only had to do this one time since. I
am so glad I did this and saved our nursing relationship!
