I understand very well one pump every NICU bed, but I am surprised by the
idea of having one every two beds in the postpartum unit.

Why so many?

Should we not suppose that moms can usually bf without a pump?

Yes! When our NICU was supplied with one pump for every room (total of 46)
some nurses on postpartum thought that we should have one for every
postpartum room. I strongly objected, because I knew that we would have
some mothers trying the pumps before they had even breastfed a few
times----then for most mothers "nothing" would come out with the pump, so
they would not believe that they "had any milk", so they would feel they had
to supplement.and then we would be going down that awful road. This happens
often enough WITHOUT a pump in every room, although the staff are getting
much better at encouraging mothers to JUST breastfeed and explaining about
normal colostrum amounts. Many mothers don't believe it, though. L
