I must add some info about my sweet girl who has been struggling with
nursing. She did NOT have issues with a retained placenta as she said that
the Dr actually said it was "beautiful" once she delivered it. I did encourage
skin to skin contact between feeds which mom had been doing as well as dad!
Mom prefered soy formula because she was concerned about allergies
although she did not have a strong family history of it. Unfortunately I did not
have a scale with me at her home so I could not assess weight but because
we had not seen a void or stool in over 8 hrs, baby had a hoarse cry along
with a dry looking mouth and most importantly mom's high high high anxiety
over the baby "starving" we decided to supplement. Please believe me, I am
the last person to encourage formula but in this case I felt it was warranted.
(The client's mom already had a bottle cracked open upon my arrival.) I am
glad that I was there when she did supplement as I was able to teach her
how to feed at the breast, use small amts, not feed from a bottle, etc. Mom's
anxiety was greatly reduced once the baby seemed more satisfied. I really
believe no matter how much education and calming I gave mom she would
have still gave the baby something once I left. Finally, I do realize that
pumping is not the same as nursing but we were just trying to give extra
stimulation and wanted to see if the pump would pull anything from the breast
since it did not look like the baby was. I did explain to mom before she started
pumping that she should expect to see only see a sm. amt. when first using a
pump.
I am happy to report that as of today (day 6 1/2), she is still nursing. She
said she decided not to give up. YEA! She reported that she thought she
heard swallows with this mornings with the feed for the first time. She pumped
after the feed and had 10ccs in the bottle. I gave mom a lot of praise and
encouragement and told her how proud I was of her. Hopefully we are turning
the corner now. I appreciate all of the input that you have all sent me. I will
keep you posted.
