This young woman (her e-mail copied below with her permission) would appreciate any and all suggestions, including names of specialists anywhere in the US, although she resides in Houston, TX. The reason her mother initially contacted me was because the pain from the fibroadenomas is interfering with her dd's daily activities and she is only 16. She definitely plans to breastfeed down the road (which is how I came into the picture long-distance) and realizes that surgery may impact that course, but the pain has become distracting. Her family tends to take a low-intervention approach, but is open to the best options for this young woman.

Please e-mail me off-list at [log in to unmask] and thank you for your wisdom! (It would be simplest if you give me permission to forward your responses directly to this young woman's mother and I am happy to remove your name/credentials from said responses.)

Sincerely,
Rebecca DeYoung-Daniels, MBA, RD, LD, IBCLC, RLC

>>Female

Age: 16,

Age of onset of symptoms: About two years ago August 21, 2008 (age 14 first sign).

Path to diagnosis: have been checking with Kelsey-Seybold breast center for 1.5 years now, i.e. breast exam, last ultrasound (9/16/2010), biopsy (9/23/2010) - Fibroadenoma (2 on my left breast, one small, one large 1.8 x 1.4x 1.6 cm).

Options presented 2 weeks ago: Wait and watch, ultrasound in 6 months, or have them surgically removed if the lumps caused patient pain and discomfort.

Pain pattern: every now and then, and after a strenuous activity. The lumps have been causing chest pain, even when breathing, and my family and I would like to do some research before committing to surgery.

General health: Healthy

Diet:
Chinese food (stir fry vegetables, tofu), lots of vegetables with cancer fighting properties (tomatoes, broccoli, blueberries), shrimp and salmon during religious fasting periods; chicken, some pork (natural ham and turkey lunch meat); cheese, ice cream on non-fasting days. Don't eat out hardly (once in a blue moon), too greasy - pizza, fried chicken sometimes (2 or 3 times a year).<<
