Pregnant women are certified for their entire pregnancy, but must be
recertified after delivery. If they don't breastfeed, they qualify for six
months, but breastfeeding women can qualify for up to one year. Infants
qualify until age 1 whether they are breastfed or bottle-fed and children
qualify until age 5 though they must be recertified every six months.

Q. WIC recently partnered with the Doula Foundation of Mid America. Why?

A. As mentioned earlier, our agency goals include increasing breastfeeding
initiation and duration and increasing our caseload. There is documentation
showing that with the support and education of a doula (a supportive
companion professionally trained to provide labor support) during pregnancy
and after delivery, a mother is more likely to breastfeed and to breastfeed
for a longer time than if she doesn't have this type of support.

In addition to providing doula services free to our clients, the partnership
offers free childbirth, prenatal yoga and baby yoga classes. These classes
help mothers learn about and prepare for birth, and bond with their babies
once they are born.

WIC also provides free breastfeeding education, breast-pump loans and
lactation counseling, but our goal is to have a lactation center staffed
partly by volunteers to offer free breastfeeding support and counseling to
anyone in the community who wants or needs it. At the hospitals there is a
charge for lactation counseling, and many families can't afford that. So
when mom hits a difficulty in breastfeeding, she quits. We want to fill that
gap because we know moms have lots of health benefits from breastfeeding and
baby has lots of health benefits and that's about as basic a public health
goal as you can get. We're dreaming big and we really hope we can do it
because there's such a need for it.
