I work with a private practice and we are now being told by a peds practice that they do not want LCs telling patients we see for them about tongue tie because it is making them "look bad". This despite the fact that often they fail to recognize and address the most obvious tongue ties and then send them to us. Isn't it inappropriate for one profession to dictate how another profession practices? It seems unethical for me to not give the parents my full assessment, but rather pass on important information only to the pediatrician, who may or may not act on that assessment - and then they aren't they making me look bad? In my experience, peds will refer to ENTs - some will snip, some will say "it's not "bad" enough", etc etc but they never know about lip ties. I feel it is my responsibility to tell patients their options and give them educational materials about this. We have sent those educational materials to the peds with our reports and rather than "see the light", this is the response. I'm a fairly "new" LC - have been working regularly for 3 years, but first certified in 2006, also a CNM (not practicing). I have spent many hours learning independently about this issue and through seminars and webinars (thanks Jennifer Tow :) have additional CEUs but also wondering if there is an actual "certification" regarding this highly controversial topic. I'm aware of the upcoming conference in Ohio :); just don't know if I can make it. Thank you.

Laura Coulter, CNM, MS, IBCLC
