"Baby was term and weighed 7# 10oz at birth. He is two months old now and
weighs 17#....... Baby is breastfed most of the time but there are pumping
and bottles most days of the week."

Dear Pat,

Could be a case of a mom with very rich milk feeding frequently and then
also topping off with large amounts of bottled breastmilk (or formula?)
which baby is happily chugging down. Even so, wow, that's a big gain. Why
is this mom pumping and bottling if she has an oversupply problem? How
about doing the usual oversupply protocol with one-sided nursing and no
bottles and see what happens? If weight gain slows with a more "normal"
feeding pattern, then that is obviously at least part of the problem. If
mom has to bottlefeed part of the time, for whatever reason, then an effort
should be made to pace the feedings and not let the baby suck down large
amounts very quickly.

It may be that this baby is going to be a fast gainer regardless - someone
has to be on the far end of the bell curve - but this does seem to be
pushing the limits. I remember a baby in the news a few years ago that was
absolutely huge. Can't remember if it turned out to be some kind of genetic
abnormality or what. I'm sure the ped will be following this closely.
Could be a prelude to or indication of other abnormalities. Let us know
what happens.

Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, BS, IBCLC
