Denise,
We've been going round and round about #of urines/stools before milk
is in. Recently, one of our peds, hospital LC, postpartum RN, and myself
got together and started to brainstorm this one. We reviewed all
professional and lay references and as you noted all refer to " after milk
is in". We've come up with the following. I'd also appreciate other
lactnetters opinions. Hope this helps:

First 24 hours of Life: one urine and one stool (tarry black)

Second 24 hours of Life: 3 urine and 3 stools (tarry black or green)

Third 24 hours of Life: 3 urine and 3 stools (green)

Fourth 24 hours of Life and after: 6-8 urines and 3 stools (may
have up to 6-10) Stools changing to green/yellow

I'd really like to know what you all think about this. Especially the
second 24 hours. This is a concern because of our early d/c moms. I've
seen lots of babes do fine urinating only 2 times during the second 24 hours
of life; however, these babes are still inpatient and nurses are evaluating
how soaked the diaper is and how the baby looks. We went with 3
urinations/stools on the second day to catch borderline hydration problems
in early d/c babies. Mothers are told if baby does not meet the minimum
output requirements to breastfeed and follow with formula x 1. If she
continues to have to supplement for over 24 hours, she is told to notify
hospital LC.

TIA for you input regarding the output!

Donna Zitzelberger, RN, BSN, CLE and MOM too!
