From my A&P textbook: "Whereas white fat stores nutrients, brown fat
consumes its nutrient stores to generate heat to warm the body. The richly
vascular brown fat occurs only in babies who (as yet) lack the ability to
produce body heat by shivering. Most such deposits are located between the
shoulder blades, on the anterolateral neck and on the anterior abdominal
wall."

Not much more than you already know and still no clear reference to why it
would be beneficial to breastfed (v. formula fed) newborns.
