Just wanted to say that it isn't only WIC moms using those baby carrier/car
seat thingies we see all the time. I can tell you I know plenty of upper
middle class, highly educated women who tote their children around in them.
I don't see it as a class or socio-economic issue, but one that is without
regard to such social lines. It is simply another example of the hugely
successful marketing of a product that keeps moms and babies at a distance.
The real question is, "Why does our culture fall so hard and fast for
products (carriers, abm, and so on) that glorify the separation of mother
and baby?"

If WIC can give out slings or other carriers that keep baby close to his/her
mother, that would be money well spent.
