Yes. And you are right It is another ploy. What does the ABM say and California Perinatal Quality Initiative? It says: use a hypoallergenic formula if you cannot obtain donor milk unless the baby has to have some highly specialized formula. Period. In my outpatient dept I only keep one kind of formula for emergency use and it's a hydrolyzed formula. We just looked at labels to get the one with the least objectionable ingredients that people are complaining about (HFCS, soy, wheat, etc.). No issues so far. No babies have objected. It's a ploy to make mothers think it's okay, not that it's temporary. The rep admits it too. Follow the money, follow the money. And let me rant about poor moms with pumps given by their insurance companies - mailed to the house with no real hands-on instruction. Ugh. The nipples I am seeing! Retirement can't come soon enough.

Subject: new formula being marketed

Hi again,

We had the Similac rep come today, and she introduced yet another formula to our staff - this one is "Similac for Supplementation" and states on the bottle - "for breastfeeding moms who choose to introduce formula". My manager says that the rep says Similac has added prebiotics in this formula which are gentler on the baby's stomach. She also suggested that the label is good for breastfeeding moms, because it gives the message that the supplementation is only temporary. Of course, I completely disagreed and believe it's just another ploy to get moms to think it's ok to use the formula.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this new formula around, and what your hospital staff has said about it. Thanks again,

Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
