This is what I sent:

Secretary Thompson,
I heard today that the Ad Council's National Breastfeeding Awareness
Campaign campaign has been placed on hold at the request of the formula
industry, and I am outraged.

For many years the formula industry has had millions of dollars to
advertise their products, with the unusual and unique good fortune to
have competition (mother's own milk) which DID NOT HAVE IT'S OWN
ADVERTISING BUDGET.

Now, many medically and scientifically knowledgable people have stepped
up and produced a campaign which is honest, forthright, and completely
ethical- which is more than can be said of formula industry tactics. To
allow the formula industry to dictate, in any way, what the
breastfeeding competition has to say, is not only Un-American, it goes
against the spirit of a free-market.

It is simply appalling that an industry could pull the strings of
politicians this way. The taxpayer expects Health and Human Services to
look out for it's human citizens, not corporations who glad-hand with
bribe money at every turn. I expect you to defend the campaign, intact,
and in fact, I think you might consider kicking in some extra funding to
make it crystal clear that, unlike the Americian Academy of Pediatrics,
your department is not in the pocket of the formula industry. I will be
watching the outcome of this unfortunate turn of events closely.

Sincerely,
Susan Jacoby, IBCLC
