I want to correct any misinterpretations from the my post on Friday regarding
solid foods. Nina responded, "nutritionally adequate complementary foods
should be offered in addition to breast milk." My understanding is that when
babies start eating solid foods, their daily caloric intake stays the same.
Therefore, their overall intake of breastmilk is reduced, thus displacing some
amount of breastmilk with solids.
I am well aware that breastfeeding should continue long past the introduction
of solid foods, as well as the benefits of extended breastfeeding into toddler
hood. My daughter started solids much later than is recommended, and she
also breastfed for an extended period of time!
Warmly,
Susie McCulloch, LLLL IBCLC
