Look at NY State, for example, which publishes a complete K through 12
syllabus for teaching about breastfeeding that has never, to my knowledge,
been used anywhere :( The excuse, of course, is lack of time.

I think back (not that far...early 1990's) to my high school health classes.
We spent mind-numbing amounts of time on alcohol, tobacco, recreational
street drugs, and STDs. We also had to do an "egg baby" project where we
made little "egg babies" (painted faces and decorations on eggs, which would
be our babies for a week) and had to carry them around to classes, find
"babysitters" for them, and write up a journal about the experience. There
could easily be a unit on breastfeeding thrown in there. Nowadays they have
an actual "baby" -- some electronic doll with a computer chip that cries,
needs to be changed, fed, etc. They could talk about breastfeeding there,
too.

Of course, I had all that education on those subjects (not a word about
breastfeeding), and now in my job, I have mandatory training each year,
several hours' worth, on...alcohol, drugs, tobacco, STDs. I could stand up
and recite every single phrase, as could pretty much everyone else in the
room. I tried once to propose a "professional development" session on
breastfeeding (because I and the other nursing mothers in our unit were
victims of discrimination; when our leadership would allow us the
flexibility to pump or take accrued leave from a job that would have
required a very long separation, many of our peers would find other ways to
make their disapproval clear), but was told "we don't have the time for
that."

*sigh*
