Coach Smith here.

Most of the major textbook publishers (including Lactation texts) follow a
revision cycle of about 5 years. Books published in 1999 were probably
written in 1998 and prior years. Books published in 2003 and 2004 are likely
either (1) in revision now, (2) will be revised very soon, or (2) address
topics that therefore unlikely to become outdated or go obsolete quickly.

The huge surge in research on breastfeeding and human lactation has changed
and expanded our body of knowledge, sometimes rather drastically, and fairly
quickly. If you buy an older edition of a text, be aware that SOME of the
information and philosophy will be outdated now. For example, the third
edition of Breastfeeding and Human Lactation contained about 45% new or
drastically changed information from the 2nd edition.

Reading ANY lactation text would be better than NOT reading a published
reference book, even if it's not the latest edition. However, DO make every
effort to get the latest editions of core texts. When in doubt, check the
publisher's web sites which will have the latest edition available to
purchase, information about new editions in progress, and books that are in
press.

And DO subscribe to at least one peer-reviewed lactation journal. Here are
some links:
