Donna,
I'm not familiar w/ any specifics of this disease or treatment, however the
mother could explore all her options which could include, in no specific
order:
1. delaying treatment for a few more weeks (if this would not compromise
survival of course) in order to stockpile more milk
2. discarding milk for some of the days or weeks of treatment - is the chemo
to be given weekly, monthly? the last few days of the week or month possibly
mother could express and use that milk w/ low or nil levels of chemo in her
system
3. exploring various drugs or combinations and using the least toxic - again
possibly being able to use the milk on days of low levels. This is provided
mother would continue to express during the chemo period - and resume bf
after the chemo is d/c'd.
4. Infant of course should be monitored for drug levels and adverse effects.
