I think many if not most moms in their 20s and 30s in the US today have not
had first-hand experience with babies or even much close contact with
someone else who is caring for a baby. We have smaller families, we're
spread out further, and it's rare that older siblings take much of a hand in
helping to care for younger siblings, cousins, neices, or nephews.

Our whole lives are increasingly high-tech, low-touch. We interact with
machinery more than with people face to face. We deal with "idea" data
rather than concrete real-life things that we can touch and see with our own
eyes. Gross generalizations, but it all adds up.
