I would strongly agree with Laurie that a large portion of physicians are just
one of the groups that undermine a new mother's confidence in her ability to
breastfeed: just as many OB's (even when they have birthed children of their
own) don't give normal birth a chance either.

We have a MALE MD/IBCLC (if you can imagine such a person)here in
Connecticut. Several years ago, he was one of the principal speakers at The
Connecticut Breastfeeding Coilition dinner. The major focus of his talk was the
fact that probably the most inaccurate breastfeeding information is given out
in pediatrician's offices. He said this to a room full of pediatricians and office
personnel.

I would have to agree because just this evening as I was dealing with my
labor patient (whose OB doesn't trust the normal birth process) I was also
asked to help someone with breastfeeding issues whose pedi had given the
mother the usual amount of bogus information that this particular practitioner
usually gives new mothers.

Again, it's one small step for one mother and baby dyad at a time.
