I am replying to the list because maybe this is useful for someone else or
maybe someone can correct my Spanish (I am obviously a native speaker, but
Spanish differs slightly from one country to another).
The main point here is emphasizing that the nipple actually has to point
upwards. I generally tell the mom to place the botom fingers closer to the
areola and the upper fingers closer to the torax (LOS DEDOS DE ABAJO MAS
CERCA DE LA PARTE OSCURA DEL PECHO QUE LOS DE ARRIBA) this places the
nipple ponting upwards. I also mention that when the baby's head is tilted
sligthly backwards, the latch also is more asymmetric (LA CABEZA DEL BEBE
INCLINADA UN POCO HACIA ATRAS). This would be the "chin in" mentioned in
Karen Palmer's post.
I do a lot of e-mail assistance and have to describe asymetrical latch
with words. But a mother that sends an e-mail has necessarily a fair
command of language, therefore I can use the 10000 words that replace a
good image. Thus, with a mother with limited education I would use a doll
to demonstrate what I am saying.
I will be happy to help translating exactlu what you want to say to these
moms.
