I helped (twice) a silver medal hurdler who lives here in Austin. This was
some years back, but we worked out a way for her to train while lactating
that involved nursing or pumping right before her workout and wearing two
bras (a nursing bra covered by a sports bra). The two bras seemed to
control better for both lateral sway and bounce. Cathy Fetherston's
wonderful (prize winning) article about mastitis mentions strenuous upper
body exercise as a less common but still significant predictor for mastitis,
and this was something I was always concerned about with my client. I
imagine that this would be quite concerning to most of these atheletes who
would be devastated to become ill before competing. My client avoided any
problems, but I think a lot was due to her deliberate birth timing. She did
wean before the Summer games, but she timed each birth to occur in Summer,
training started in Fall, and she weaned before the serious trials began
early the next summer.
