When a mom at home tells me the baby closes his eyes at the breast within  
just a couple of minutes of the feed, it is a RED FLAG!!  If you put a  bottle 
in the baby's mouth (oh heaven forbid!!) the baby's eyes fly open and he  gulps 
with his eyes open until he is full.  Inevitably, the babies who  breastfeed 
with their eyes closed (after milk should be increased in volume) are  often 
taking less than an ounce at the breast.
 
Just my observations.  But even with young babies (not the first 48 to  72 
hours -- after that), I see eyes wide open.  In fact, it is one of the  things I 
tell moms to look for.  I'm with Cathy on this one....
