In reference to a baby with a poor seal,
Pam asked:
"Someone mentioned submucosal cleft to me off list, and I am wondering
---
isn't this something the pediatrician would have noticed during an
exam? How
common is this and how often is it missed? I have read on line about
it, but
it says it is rare. However, is it one of those things that
bottlefeeding
mothers would not notice and would go undetected for a long time? "

We on Lactnet are keeping company with some pretty fabulous peds, but
honestly, I have seen so many obvious tongue-ties missed, that I
sometimes wonder what some docs are looking at. And, I am shocked at
some of the babies whose crania and faces are so misaligned that I
cannot imagine how they can suckle anything, yet no notice is ever
taken. I wonder if facial assymetry has become so common due to the
frequent truama of medicalized births, that they go completely
unrecognized. When I have a baby who cannot hold a seal, I always refer
for CST and it pretty much always works.
