I'm sorry if I have asked this before (I'm on a new computer, and
only have mail from Jan 1 here), but I'm looking for info on nursing
with cold sores.
My situation:
I'm nursing a 5y4m old, a 3y8m, and a 11wk old baby. My 5yo has had
cold sores before, and he's been quite understanding about 'no
nursing with a coldsore' (before the baby, we'd just deligate sides,
but since the baby, we've asked him to stop and he's okay with that).
My 3yo (who's very attached to her nunnies still) just developed her
first one today, and is devistated with the news of no nunnies.
Without risking infecting myself, or the baby, how can we safely
continue nursing - or should we be stopping no matter how much she
protests. Would a nipple shield help protect myself, and the other
children (right now the 5 and 3yo have one - my 5y developed it
yesterday, my 3yo today) - baby still shows no signs (thankfully),
and neither do my breasts (again, thankfully).
All info I am finding online is about nursing with a coldsore on the
breast (which I didn't realise could happen before now), or a toddler
with a coldsore, or the risks for an infant getting them - but
nothing about transmission between children via breastfeeding (not a
common situation I'm sure).
Any advice on this one? I'm willing to buy shields and label one for
each of the older kids and make them use them while they have a
coldsore if that would help......
Hopefully someone has had some experience with this and can touch on
this for me. Thanx.
