Thankyou for the responses that I received to my posting yesterday. A
little more information regarding further questions asked. It seems
clear that the mother did have mastitis as her symptoms included sudden
onset of fever, chills, general malaise along with suddenly increased
pain and warmth on the affected breast. Since the mastitis reoccurred,
I am assuming it was not eradicated the first time, and that it is
possible that a bacterial infection is still present. The present pain
appears to be unrelated and is isolated in her nipples. She has pain at
latch in both, pain during nursing in the left only, although she
describes the odd feeling of milk being drawn through the ducts towards
the outer breast and under her arm on the affected side.

Have any of you ever seen thrush where treatment (nystatin, lamisil,
gentian violet) did not offer at least temporary relief from
discomfort? She has experienced not even the slightest reduction with
treatment. This is the main thing that is causing both of us to
question whether thrush is the culprit. Particularly because she is a
natural health practitioner & homeopath, she is very hesitant to begin a
systemic treatment unless she is certain of the diagnosis (although she
has had the prescription filled and there it sits).
