Someone suggested that first-time parents need specific guidelines on diaper
counts, etc. to assess adequate intake, but more experienced parents learn
to watch the baby instead. I have found that some experienced moms may be
too relaxed about breastfeeding, especially if they have successfully BF
several children. If they then get a very layed-back, easy-going baby they
may not pick-up on subtle cues that the baby is not thriving. When I
discharge experienced moms from the hospital, I make sure to point out the
need to count BF's and diapers for the next week to make sure the they get
off to a good start.
