I am not aware of any consensus stating that we should not use inverted
syringes to help pull out nipples. So much of health care involves
products used for other purposes than what they were originally intended
for;  I don't as a rule see doctors worrying about this.  IMO, the most
important concern is to let the mother know that the option we are
recommending is not an official product: give her the choice of a $30
pump or a $1 syringe, and she'll most likely opt for the syringe!  If you
are really concerned about liability, write yourself up a "release of
liability" form for moms to sign. And don't forget; adequate instructions
are the most important thing of all!
