Pam,
First of all congratulations on your new arrival. Of course, we all
know that a mother can't birth a large baby without drugs and/or
interventions, now don't we. (TIC)
I think your observations of your concerns in spite of the
intellectual knowledge that they shouldn't be concerns is important
for all of us to remember. There is still a lot of overlay for
every new mom based on her previous experiences and all the
"messages" she has gotten from media, health "experts" over the
years. Those of us who have been around for years need to think
back from time to time to how we felt as new moms. Frequently when
I am going over information with a new mom, her mother or
mother-in-law is also in the room. Most of the time they comment
something like "I wish I had known all that when mine were babies."
I then will respond, "I wish I had known then half of what I've
learned over the intervening years." Even with my third, after I
had been a LLL Leader for several years and felt I had fully joined
the ranks of the breastfeeding fanatics, when my pediatrician (who
was among the most supportive available at that time) commented that
maybe baby should have gained more, I started having the same doubts
and worries that other less experienced moms feel.
