Subject: early menses

Coincidentally, with the recent postings on bf and relation to age of onset of
menses, I received a question from a woman who is pregnant and intends to
continue bf her eight month old infant. Her ob told her that "because of the
change of hormones in pregnancy which affect the milk, the child would be at
risk for early onset of puberty and that she should wean."
It seems by all the postings in Lactnet that the opposite is true. Any ideas on
this?

Well, only anecdotal here, but I started my menses at 11 yrs, 11 months. (
breastfed 4 months never exclusively). Assumed my daughters would follow me,
so far #2 child, (daughter) just got her first menses at 13 years, 7 months.
(has had two cycles so far). She bf through my pregnancy with #3 and then
tandem nursed until she was 4. She is 5'4 and 105 #.
#3 child, (daughter) is overweight 124# and 57 inches tall, now age 11. She bf
until age 4, during my pregnancy with #4 and tandem after that. Dr. said at
her recent check up that she would probably not start her menses until about
the same age as her older sister. (she has breast tissue because of her
weight, but still only barely starting true breast development).

My BIL is an OB/GYN and has always said that girls need to be around 100# before
they start. I was nowhere near that weight when I started, very skinny kid, my
oldest daughter is heavier then I was at that age, (still very thin) and
started much later. If weight is the issue, then my 11 yo should be starting
anytime. She is prepared, but was relieved when Dr. said no, she wasn't
close.

I have watched some casual friends have daughters fed soy formula developing
very early. (which has been documented of course). My anecdotal experiences so
far have been interesting. My oldest daughter's friends that were breastfed
have all gotten their menses later then the girls that were bottle fed. Even
when the breastfed girls are bigboned and well rounded girls. (not overweight,
just healthy, solid weights)

I believe there must be a correlation.
