I am a women's health NP, and deal with bleeding issues like this
frequently.

To avoid the breastmilk-decreasing properties of an estrogen containing
BCP, I'd recommend a progestin product like norethindrone or
medroxyprogesterone to control bleeding. It can be taken in a similar
way--6 times a day tapering down to once daily over a period of 2-3
weeks.

The heavy bleeding is due to endometrial build-up over the past few
months. Once the periods are regular in timing again, the periods
shouldn't be so heavy.

If her bleeding is heavy (read=soaking a pad in an hour or less) she
should take the pills she was given until she can get an alternative.
Hemorrhage would definitely decrease milk supply..

HTH,
Leah Moynihan, RNC, MSN
